At Akwaaba Volunteers, we believe that even the youngest members of our community can make a powerful difference. Through small actions and shared responsibility, children can learn how to care for their environment while building confidence and teamwork. Last term, our Year 1 students showed exactly what that looks like by winning our school’s recycling competition.
Over several weeks, the students worked together to collect plastic waste from around the school and nearby areas. With enthusiasm and determination, they gathered nearly 20 kilograms of plastic, waste that might otherwise have ended up littering the school grounds or polluting the local environment. Their commitment not only helped create a cleaner space for everyone, but also showed the importance of environmental awareness from a young age.
The recycling challenge quickly became more than just a competition. It encouraged students to think about how their everyday actions can have a positive impact on their community. Teachers and classmates cheered them on as the collection grew, turning the effort into a shared success for the whole school.
To celebrate their incredible achievement, the class received a well-deserved reward: a special trip to Bunny Bunnies, a brand-new indoor playground in Ghana.
For many of the children, it was their very first time visiting a place like this, which made the experience even more exciting. From the moment they arrived, the room was filled with laughter and energy. The children explored trampolines, raced down colourful slides, and jumped into ball pits. There were football games to play, toy cars to drive, pretend shops to explore, and creative play areas that sparked their imagination.
The day also included a lively performance and some well-earned snacks, giving the children time to relax and celebrate their hard work together. For the teachers and volunteers, the highlight was simply seeing the children’s joy—smiles from start to finish as they experienced something new and unforgettable.
Moments like these remind us that learning about environmental responsibility can be both meaningful and fun. By combining education with celebration, we help children understand that their efforts truly matter.
At Akwaaba Volunteers, we are proud to encourage young people to care for their environment, take pride in their community, and celebrate the positive impact they can make. Our recycling champions have shown that even small hands can help create big change.
