experience
of a lifetime
“Spending six months volunteering with Akwaaba Volunteers has been one of the most rewarding and eye-opening experiences. It is a truly special place, made even more meaningful by the incredible people behind it. From your very first day in the school, you’re immersed in an environment you won’t forget.
Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or through creative and vocational activities, everything is centred around giving the children opportunities, confidence, and support they might not otherwise have.
There are so many ways to get involved, from classroom teaching to sports such as football and netball, as well as hairdressing, sewing, the IT centre, and the library. There’s something for everyone, and every contribution makes a difference.
If you’re thinking about volunteering with Akwaaba, my advice is: book your flight—you won’t regret it.
Top tip: Say yes to as many activities as you can to make the most of your experience… and avoid wearing white—it won’t stay that way for long!
“Thank you so much for the great experience I had in Ghana. I felt at home really quickly and very safe, the Akwaaba team escorted my to my project until I felt confident travelling on my own. I met a lot of wonderful people and am very glad i could help the animals in the clinic. I am a veterinary student and this was an amazing experience for my studies. King and Jordan, thankyou so much for everything.”

“When I signed up to volunteer with Akwaaba in Ghana, I honestly had no idea what the week would entail — but I decided to put my best foot forward and throw myself into it wholeheartedly. Looking back, it was one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had.
Seeing firsthand the dedication and hard work that Jordan, King and Dorkas pour into what they do every single day was incredibly inspiring. I was also blown away by how friendly and welcoming everyone was — the children, teachers, parents, and the wider community. The warmth and kindness of the Ghanaian people made such a lasting impression on me.
What touched me most was witnessing how people can have so little materially, yet possess so much in spirit, joy and generosity. It truly puts into perspective how much we take for granted and how much of our daily lives is simply “noise.”
Thank you to everyone who made this week so meaningful and unforgettable. It’s an experience that will stay with me for a lifetime and as Arnie says “I’ll be back”

“It has been a huge privilege to spend time with Akwaaba Volunteers in Accra, Ghana. What Jordan and King do for endless children every day is inspirational – from providing them with an education, health care, social support and a safe place to play the sports they love. Future Leaders School and the sports projects are incredible; the sheer determination, love and passion for life and learning is so eye-opening. My experiences have showed me how precious life is, and how it is irrelevant what we have in life, it is who we have and who we are that is important.”

“A really brilliant experience in a country full of friendly and positive people! Jordan and King provided an organised and fully enjoyable time, as well as friendship and freedom to explore the country yourself. I feel I have really explored Ghana and have been given plenty of opportunities to do so. I felt like the free time and volunteer time were balanced perfectly. This has been a brilliant experience. The volunteering projects they run really make a difference and I fully encourage anyone to experience it for themselves.”

“I would highly recommend to anyone looking for volunteer work to go to Akwaaba Volunteers. I really enjoyed my time which I spent with Jordan, Kind and everyone in the volunteer house. I spent my time in Accra helping coach an Academy and the under 13 community team. It was a really eye opening experience which I will always look back on.”

“I chose Akwaaba volunteers as my first ever volunteer trip abroad and honestly was the best decision I could make. Jordan and King are so great at making the time you spend with them worth while, fun and make every effort to do everything you want to do during your stay. Extra activities are well planned around exactly what volunteers want to do.
We had amazing home cooked food everyday and the volunteer house is nice and open and in a great location close to the airport and beach.
I chose the teaching project and although schools were closed for Easter, Jordan still arranged for daily tutoring and after school classes for me to attend which were great fun.
Akwaaba is a great choice especially to introduce you to Ghana. Cannot wait to go back!”

“I have been fortunate enough to visit Ghana five times over the past nine years, and my experience with Akwaaba Volunteers is something that truly cannot be matched. What this organisation does for the community is nothing short of incredible.
Without Akwaaba, hundreds of children would not have access to education, healthcare, or the support they need to dream about their future. For many families living in extreme poverty, the work they do provides opportunities that simply wouldn’t exist otherwise. They give children the chance to learn, to play sport, to stay healthy, and most importantly, to believe that they can become something.
Seeing the work that Jordan and King put in every single day with hundreds of children and families is deeply inspiring. Their dedication to the community is extraordinary, and witnessing it first-hand really gives you a new perspective on your own life—especially if you come from a country where opportunities are far more accessible.
Through my time with Akwaaba, I’ve had the privilege of taking photographs, creating two documentary films, and helping to raise funds to support their work. But more than anything, the experiences I’ve had and the relationships I’ve built will stay with me for the rest of my life.
There are many charities doing important work around the world, but there is something truly special about Akwaaba Volunteers. The impact they have is real, personal, and deeply felt throughout the community.
Every time I leave Ghana, I feel like I leave a piece of my heart behind. It is an unforgettable experience, and I feel incredibly grateful to have witnessed the difference they are making.”

“It was our dream to work as volunteer nurses for people with a different culture and lifestyle.
We consciously chose an organization that offered a small-scale and safe project.
Akwaaba Volunteers, particularly King and Jordan, fully met this expectation!
King and Jordan took the time to guide us and help us get started. Thanks to the trust of King, Jordan, and the many schoolchildren, we were able to start our own project at the school. The contact and gratitude of the children were heartwarming and touched us to the core of our souls.
The medical supplies and the extra budget we had provided came in very handy! With this, we were able to renew the first-aid boxes at the school, give medical care for the children and elderly community, fund blood pressure monitors, glucose, deworming medication, eye and dental care.
Our days were well filled: caregiving, swimming lessons, education, sports, …
On the weekend, we went on trips and enjoyed the beauty of the country. We received help from Jordan in organizing things like transportation.
The accommodation, Brannic Lodge, was basic. Everything was available and clean. We did not miss the luxury of home for a single moment.
It felt good for us to live according to the rhythm of Africa for a month, to feel the warmth and friendship of these people, and to take time for ourselves.
Thank you!”

“My time with Akwaaba Volunteers was truly unforgettable.
The Future Leaders School and the after school sport and extra classes put on by Akwaaba were incredible, they radiate energy and happiness amongst all of the children, and it was inspiring to see how much the children wanted to learn and grow. I especially enjoyed working with the intervention class and spending after school with the girls of all ages playing netball, dancing and learning crochet – although they quickly became better teachers than I was!
Exploring Accra on the weekends was also a highlight. I would recommend Osu Castle and the Independence Museum & Park to learn about the history of Ghana. The Green Butterfly Market and the Arts Centre are really cool to wander around!
What stood out most, however, was seeing the passion, dedication and love from Jordan, King, Dorcas and the wider Akwaaba team. Because of this charity, children’s lives are enriched and changed for the better.
Overall, it has genuinely changed my perspective on life, an I feel so lucky to have been apart of such a beautiful community and mission!

“I had one of the best experiences of my entire life, an experience that some can only dream of. Not only did I get to see Accra from a local perspective but I was also able to go on fun excursions to the beach, a botanical garden, and the craft market. I did an art placement that enabled me to push my artwork to a new level. The couple that runs Akwaaba Volunteers does a great job of accommodating you with helping you to get the most out of your time in Ghana. The food at the house was really good, thanks to the wonderful cook Evelyn, I was able to try a range of Ghanaian dishes that were extremely delicious. I would definitely recommend volunteering with Akwaaba Volunteers, as it is an experience not to be missed.”

“The experience I had with Akwaaba Volunteers was amazing! It was my first time in Ghana, and I immediately loved how Jordan and King welcomed me and showed me around to give me the full Ghana experience. The kids that Jordan and King do everything they can for are truly amazing. They’re eager to learn, have the brightest smiles, and it was incredible to be part of their community and help by teaching music. They have amazing drumming skills and the happiest dance moves! The first three months were so amazing and eye-opening that I came back 2 years later and hopefully, there’s more to come! 🥳”

“Akwaaba Volunteers has made my Ghana experience extremely positive, they have helped organise travelling, nights out, weekend activities and every thing to do with my placement. The house was clean, comfortable and perfect for spending time in before and after placement. Open and easy to relax and I felt at home. There are clean beds and bathrooms with good showers and space to live. The food was excellent. I have complex dietary requirements and Jordan and the team catered for all of my needs, designing my own menu to make sure I had fresh, tasty, nutritious food everyday. Akwaaba exceed in catering for everyone and making meal times enjoyable and social. Jordan and Kind gave me so much support and guidance with my placement and made sure I was settling in well and feeling confident in what was expected of me. They continued to support me throughout my time here and I have loved every minute of my placement. I would recommend Akwaaba Volunteers to everyone of all backgrounds, ages and experience, you will leave with so many wonderful memories and unforgettable experiences.”

“We brought a group of about 45 parents and players from Abu Dhabi to Ghana in 2023 and it was an incredible, life enhancing and impactful experience for the whole party. Akwaaba were brilliant in managing and organising the trip from the time we arrived in Ghana to the time we departed. It was very valuable to have Jordan and King meet us at the airport and stay with us every step of the way. They certainly made our lives very easy and our parents loved everything about the trip, so much so that we were back in 2024 too!
We will definitely be back again.”
