From the Community Court to the National Stage: Akwaaba at the National Netball Championships

What an achievement for our girls!

This October, the Akwaaba netball team competed in Ghana’s most prestigious netball tournament, the National Netball Championships, taking on some of the strongest teams and players from across the country.

After months of training, afternoons on the court and countless hours of dedication, the girls had the opportunity to showcase just how far they have come.

And they certainly made their mark!

The team battled their way through the competition, securing a place in the semi-finals before eventually being knocked out. While we would have loved to see them reach the final, getting to this stage is an incredible achievement and something every player should be incredibly proud of.

A Journey Worth Celebrating

When we look back at how far our netball programme has come, moments like this make us particularly proud.

What started as a small group of just seven girls has grown into a programme involving more than 60 girls playing netball every day.

Through regular training, competitive fixtures, coaching and opportunities to play against teams from across Ghana, the girls have developed not only their sporting ability but also their confidence, teamwork and determination.

Our programme is about much more than learning to pass, shoot and defend. It’s about giving girls a space to belong, the confidence to challenge themselves and the opportunity to discover what they are capable of achieving.

Over the years, we have seen girls progress through our teams, represent their schools, earn scholarships and even compete at higher levels of the sport.

Bigger Opportunities, Brighter Futures

Being able to compete at the National Netball Championships and share the court with some of the best players in Ghana is exactly the kind of opportunity we want to create for our girls.

Not every child has access to organised sport, quality coaching or the chance to compete beyond their local community. We want to change that.

Every training session, every match and every tournament helps our players develop skills that extend far beyond the court – resilience, discipline, leadership and belief in themselves.

We are incredibly proud of this group and can’t wait to see what they achieve next.

A huge thank you to our coaches, supporters, donors and everyone who continues to invest in girls’ sport at Akwaaba.

From seven girls picking up a netball to competing in the semi-finals of Ghana’s biggest tournament – this is what opportunity can look like.

And we’re only just getting started!
