Opening Doors to Digital Learning: Akwaaba’s IT Centre Welcomes the Community

In today’s world, digital skills are no longer a luxury – they are an essential part of education, employment and everyday life.

But for many children in Ghana, access to computers and opportunities to develop practical IT skills remains limited.

At Akwaaba, we want to help change that.

This month, we took an exciting next step with our IT Centre, opening its doors to students from other schools in the local community and giving more young people the opportunity to get hands-on experience with technology.

Taking Learning Beyond the Classroom

While many students are introduced to computers and technology through their school curriculum, having the opportunity to actually sit down, use a computer and practise these skills is a very different experience.

Our new community sessions are designed to bridge that gap.

Students visit our IT Centre to put the theory they learn in school into practice, explore different computer skills and build confidence using technology.

From learning how to navigate a computer to developing practical digital skills, these sessions give students valuable experience that they can take back into the classroom and eventually into the workplace.

It was fantastic to welcome so many children through our doors this month and see just how enthusiastic they were to get started. For some, simply having the opportunity to use a computer independently is a big step.

More Than Just Computers

Our vision for the IT Centre has always been about more than providing access to laptops.

We want to create a space where young people can develop the skills, confidence and knowledge they need to access future opportunities.

Digital literacy is increasingly important across almost every career path, from business and education to healthcare, engineering and entrepreneurship.

By giving children the chance to explore technology from an early age, we hope to open doors that might otherwise remain closed.

The centre also forms part of our wider vocational skills programme, helping young people develop practical abilities alongside their academic education.

Growing Our Reach

Opening the IT Centre to other schools is an important milestone for Akwaaba.

We are excited to welcome more schools, teachers and students from the community and make better use of the resources we have worked so hard to establish.

Our aim is simple: to make digital learning more accessible and ensure that more children have the opportunity to develop skills for the future.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make our IT Centre possible. Your support is helping us create opportunities that reach far beyond our own school community.

Because a child’s future shouldn’t be limited by their access to technology.

And this is just the beginning!
