Weekend Joy at Our Vocational Centers

At Akwaaba Volunteers, weekends are a special time for learning, creativity, and community. While many schools close their doors at the end of the week, our vocational training centers come to life as young learners return eager to develop practical skills that can help shape their futures.

Each weekend, our centers in Ghana are filled with energy as students gather to explore different interests, learn hands-on skills, and spend time learning from one another. These sessions offer a safe and encouraging environment where young people can discover their talents while building confidence and independence.

Across our different learning spaces, there is always something exciting happening.

In our IT center, students are developing valuable digital skills that are increasingly important in today’s world. From learning the basics of computers to exploring typing, research, and online learning tools, the children are gaining confidence with technology and opening doors to new opportunities.

Our library is another favourite space during the weekends. Here, students gather to read stories, explore new books, and strengthen their love of learning. Volunteers and older students often help younger readers, creating a supportive atmosphere where curiosity is encouraged and imagination can grow.

At the hair salon and barbering center, creativity and practical skills come together. Students learn techniques in hairstyling, grooming, and customer care while gaining hands-on experience in a real training environment. These sessions not only teach valuable vocational skills but also help students build confidence and pride in their work.

Meanwhile, in the sewing center, young learners practice designing, cutting, and stitching as they develop tailoring skills. With patience and guidance, students learn how to create simple pieces and understand the craft behind clothing design. It is inspiring to see their excitement as their skills grow with each session.

One of the most meaningful aspects of these weekends is watching our older students step naturally into mentorship roles. As they gain experience, they begin guiding younger learners—demonstrating techniques, answering questions, and offering encouragement.

Through this mentorship, students learn far more than technical skills. They develop leadership, responsibility, and pride as they become role models for the next generation of learners in their community.

At Akwaaba Volunteers, our vocational programmes are about much more than learning trades. They are about building confidence, strengthening community connections, and empowering young people in Ghana to imagine new possibilities for their future.

Weekend after weekend, our centers continue to grow into vibrant spaces of learning, mentorship, and opportunity—where skills are shared, friendships are formed, and future leaders begin to shine.
