Looking for a volunteering opportunity? Akwaaba is the place to head to!

Towards the end of 2018, I joined Akwaaba Volunteers as a teaching volunteer and spent four busy and lovely weeks there.

I taught three different groups during my stay. My mornings were spent at Future Leaders UCC (Underprivileged Children’s Centre) at Labadi, Accra. Throughout the time, I taught all 10 classes with ages between 4–20. This included two Nursery groups, two Kindergarten groups, plus classes 1-6.

My lessons consisted of English grammar, creative writing prompts, workbook exercises, Maths, handicrafts and learn-by-fun methods. I also spent time working with the younger children one on one, helping them practice the skills they were taught in class.

The second group was Footballers of New Life Football Academy at Labadi, Accra. Each afternoon a group of 4–6 boys came to Akwaaba’s volunteer house for my lessons. My teaching methods and topics covered English, including various forms of discussion, speech practice and creative writing assignments, not forgetting learn-by-fun methods and good, old grammar-book exercises.

Finally, I gave one-on-one tuition for the 15-year-old Ghanaian resident of Akwaaba Volunteers, Richmond. After his school day in Junior High School, we used to have an advanced English lesson with grammar book exercises, speaking practice, etc.

I enjoyed every minute of my stay. Why? 1) Because I was given free hands to prepare my lessons. A creative approach was welcome. 2) Because the students were ever so eager to learn. 3) Because they were always ready for a laugh!

Thank you, Akwaaba, for giving me this opportunity.

Thank you so much for the great experience i had in Ghana. I felt at home really quickly and very safe, the Akwaaba team escorted my to my project until i felt confident travelling on my own. I met a lot of wonderful people and am very glad i could help the animals in the clinic. I am a veterinary student and this was an amazing experience for my studies. King and Jordan, thankyou so much for everything.

If you are looking for a new adventure I highly recommend akwaaba volunteers! They do SO many different projects and make such a difference in the community, whether it’s working with children or animals they will have a project to suite you! They made me feel welcome from the minute I arrived and the house really does feel like home in addition the the project Jordan and King help organise trips and things to do so you can make the most of your stay in Ghana by seeing as much of it as possible.

In just three short weeks I went to my project, a veterinary intern, visited the school for underprivileged children, had some fun days at the beach, travelled to cape coast to do the canopy walk and see the castle where the transatlantic slave trade took place, visited the zoo and primate conservation project and had multiple trips to town both day and night to see the real Ghana and visit a few bars to watch some live music! I feel like I’ve had the opportunity to both do an amazing project but also to see the culture and life here in Ghana!

Thankyou for a great experience in Accra. I enjoyed Jordan and Kings company and always felt safe with them. The house is a really nice place to stay. I spent 6 weeks teaching at the underprivileged children’s center and also had the opportunity to do improve my art working with a local artist from the community. My personal highlight was the trip to the Volta region to see Wli Waterfalls and climb Mount Afadjato. The smiles of the children on the project made me happy every day! I would love to come back to Ghana.

My time in Ghana volunteering with Akwaaba volunteers was better than I ever could have imagined! I volunteered at LA veterinary clinic for 2 weeks which was an amazing experience. It was so well organised by Akwaaba and I felt so supported by the team the entire time. Jordan and King of Akwaaba volunteers did everything to make our time here enjoyable. They were beyond helpful in all aspects of our trip, accompanying us to the clinic, organising fun evening activities and helping us plan weekend trips to see more of Ghana. I am in awe of the amazing work Akwaaba do in Ghana and i am so lucky to have had the opportunity to volunteer here.  My trip to Ghana was a once in a lifetime experience and I couldn’t recommend the country or Akwaaba volunteers enough! My project was wonderful and im totally in love with Ghana thanks to Akwaaba Volunteers.

Thankyou Akwaaba Volunteers for such a great time. The house was very welcoming and the projects were so friendly, the children were so pleased to see us and i certainly felt like my time here was appreciated and i have been able to have a positive impact on the lives of many children. I thoroughly enjoyed the after school club and would recommend it for all volunteers. The whole experience was great, particularly the range of extra evening and travel opportunities. I will always remember my time here at Akwaaba.

I could not recommend Akwaaba Volunteers more. Just ended the most amazing two weeks there and I could not have asked for more. I learnt so much at the clinic, experienced so many things and have fallen in love with Ghana. King and Jordan are so welcoming, fun and make the whole thing so easy. They also run an incredible and inspiring charity, and getting the chance to see some of the other projects they’re involved with was a highlight of our trip. They plan loads of fun things for afternoons and evenings, and help you plan weekend trips away, so you get to see so much of the incredible Ghana. Overall the most incredible trip, i made incredible memories and will never forget my time in Ghana. Anyone wanting to volunteer should choose Akwaaba. I hope to be back soon!

I visited Akwaaba volunteers with 3 friends and we have loved out stay and felt very welcome. I particularly enjoyed the range of activities we were offered outside of our project from visiting beaches, markets and seeing other projects that the charity offers. I love the school, the kids were amazing and it was great to be able to work one on one with some of the younger students to help develop their education, the school is doing amazing things to help underprivileged children in Ghana have access to good education. I feel like a have experienced a lot of Ghana even during our short stay. Thankyou!

Thankyou for showing me this amazing country, i truly felt at home here. I felt very well looked after and safe during my stay. The Akwaaba team will always go about and beyond. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the clinic and feel like it has helped my confidence. I have made some lifelong friends and will definitely recommend the charity to colleagues, class mates and friends and i hope to be back again.

I spent 2 weeks with Akwaaba Volunteers coaching and playing basketball. Coaching was a great experience and more and more kids were gaining interest in the sport and i loved playing with the guys too every evening. This was an amazing experience and i met so many amazing underprivileged children. Jordan and King are amazing hosts and did everything they said they would and so much more. I would definitely recommend to everyone.

Akwaaba Volunteers has made my Ghana experience extremely positive, they have helped organise travelling, nights out, weekend activities and every thing to do with my placement. The house was clean, comfortable and perfect for spending time in before and after placement. Open and easy to relax and I felt at home. There are clean beds and bathrooms with good showers and space to live. The food was excellent. I have complex dietary requirements and Jordan and the team catered for all of my needs, designing my own menu to make sure I had fresh, tasty, nutritious food everyday. Akwaaba exceed in catering for everyone and making meal times enjoyable and social. Jordan and Kind gave me so much support and guidance with my placement and made sure I was settling in well and feeling confident in what was expected of me. They continued to support me throughout my time here and I have loved every minute of my placement. I would recommend Akwaaba Volunteers to everyone of all backgrounds, ages and experience, you will leave with so many wonderful memories and unforgettable experiences.

A really brilliant experience in a country full of friendly and positive people! Jordan and King provided an organised and fully enjoyable time, as well as friendship and freedom to explore the country yourself.  I feel I have really explored Ghana and have been given plenty of opportunities to do so. I felt like the free time and volunteer time were balanced perfectly. This has been a brilliant experience. The volunteering projects they run really make a difference and I fully encourage anyone to experience it for themselves.

It was perfect!

Akwaaba Volunteers is amazing, I had such a great experience helping coach football in Ghana that I will never forget. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to do volunteer work.

I honestly don’t think I could have had a better experience as a first time volunteer. I felt very welcome very quickly and I feel at home here. Jordan, King and the team do a wonderful job.

I would highly recommend to anyone looking for volunteer work to go to Akwaaba Volunteers. I really enjoyed my time which I spent with Jordan, Kind and everyone in the volunteer house. I spent my time in Accra helping coach an Academy and the under 13 community team. It was a really eye opening experience which I will always look back on.

I had one of the best experiences of my entire life, an experience that some can only dream of. Not only did I get to see Accra from a local perspective but I was also able to go on fun excursions to the beach, a botanical garden, and the craft market. I did an art placement that enabled me to push my artwork to a new level. The couple that runs Akwaaba Volunteers does a great job of accommodating you with helping you to get the most out of your time in Ghana. The food at the house was really good, thanks to the wonderful cook Evelyn, I was able to try a range of Ghanaian dishes that were extremely delicious. I would definitely recommend volunteering with Akwaaba Volunteers, as it is an experience not to be missed.

I Had the pleasure of staying with Akwaaba Volunteers for a month and I had a wonderful month. Jordan and King will go to any length to make you sure you enjoy your stay. Their positive energy is contagious. Staying in Ghana is great, people are very friendly and the nature is stunning. Staying with Akwaaba Volunteers you get to try the lovely local food and meet many inspiring locals when you work with them in the various placements. I am definitely going to miss Ghana and Akwaaba Volunteers.

I chose Akwaaba volunteers as my first ever volunteer trip abroad and honestly was the best decision I could make. Jordan and King are so great at making the time you spend with them worth while, fun and make every effort to do everything you want to do during your stay. Extra activities are well planned around exactly what volunteers want to do.

We had amazing home cooked food everyday and the volunteer house is nice and open and in a great location close to the airport and beach.

I chose the teaching project and although schools were closed for Easter, Jordan still arranged for daily tutoring and after school classes for me to attend which were great fun.

Akwaaba is a great choice especially to introduce you to Ghana. Cannot wait to go back!
